Kings River Life

Review and Giveaway

Kings River Life is “a California magazine with local focus and global appeal.” It has a “Fantasy & Fangs” section that reviews fantasy and horror. Their reviewer recently reviewed WHOJ:

“[T]he journey approaches an epic, mythic level, pitting Noon against puzzles and monsters that can’t be defeated by flat-out attacks. The solutions are ingenious, and they help Noon build power in the magic she spent most of her life trying to hide and deny… Archer builds on the classic journey formula where the prize must be won at a cost.” Terrance McArthur for Kings River Life on White Heart of Justice

KRL is giving away one print copy of WHOJ (U.S. only). Giveaway ends tomorrow. Details on how to enter are here.

Other Wonderful Reviews and Reviewers

The Qwillery

“The chronicles of Noon’s journey to accept her place in her world culminates in a thrilling adventure… unpredictable and thoroughly satisfying… inspired and exhilarating… I loved the introduction of new creatures… [and] I love when an author surprises me. Archer raised my level of appreciation by catching me unawares.” Trinitytwo, reviewer for The Qwillery, on White Heart of Justice

 That’s What I’m Talking About

“[T]he overall story arc… was gripping and intriguing… [Noon’s] growth over the course of these books is immense and heartfelt… If you are looking for something different – this alternate realty where the apocalypse has occurred and the demons won – you should really think about picking up the first book, Dark Light of Day and enjoy the journey.” Gikany & Una at That’s What I’m Talking About on White Heart of Justice

 Proud Nerd Book Reviews

“Archer does an excellent job of constructing and explaining the magical system in her world… the “law school” angle is intriguing… The fantasy elements in the story, especially magic and the demons, work extremely well… Anyone who reads fantasy, romance, or especially a combination of the two should thoroughly enjoy Noon’s adventures.” Matthew Cirilli for Proud Nerd Book Reviews on Dark Light of Day

“While Dark Light of Day focused on Noon’s myriad struggles coming to terms with her waning magic and her new life at St. Lucifer’s Law School, Fiery Edge of Steel sweeps Noon to the edges of New Babylonian civilization into the unknown… One of Jill Archer’s greatest strengths is her ability to create unique and intriguing creatures and characters to populate Halja.” Matthew Cirilli for Proud Nerd Book Reviews on Fiery Edge of Steel

Thank you to each of these reviewers for their interest and support! I’m grateful to them for taking the time to read the books, write such thorough and thoughtful reviews, and for sending me the links so that I can share them with you. If you aren’t already following them, please check out their sites.

Readers: I’m also incredibly grateful for your interest, support, ratings, and reviews. If you’ve read White Heart of Justice but haven’t yet posted a review on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million, GoodreadsPowell’s Books, or wherever you hang out online, please consider adding your thoughts and comments! :-D

Best wishes for a terrific weekend, everyone!

Last Day! My White Heart of Justice blog tour is coming to a close…

Today’s menu:

  1. Final list of topics and links in WHOJ blog tour
  2. Discussion questions for White Heart of Justice
  3. Brief bit about the current “should adults read YA?” debate

I’ve had a terrific time visiting all of the blog hosts and reading and responding to reader comments. Each release has had its own vibe and I gotta say — even despite the uncertain future of the series — WHOJ’s release has been my favorite. Maybe it’s just that I’m getting to know the online book blogging community better (and they are getting to know me) or maybe it’s because I wasn’t a clueless newbie nor was I under enormous deadline pressure at release time. Regardless, I’ve had fun and I hope you have too. As a final thank you and one last chance for everyone to enter to win my awesome prizes, I’m listing all the blog tour participants below with dedicated links to each site and a brief description of topics. If you haven’t already checked out the posts, interviews, and reviews, please do! I am grateful to each and every tour participant and to Roxanne Rhoads at Bewitching Book Tours for setting it up.

What else have I been working on? Among other things, I’ve been tinkering with my website. As promised, I added Discussion Questions for White Heart of Justice. If you read the ones for either Dark Light of Day or Fiery Edge of Steel, you know they contain MASSIVE SPOILERS. Pretty much the entire plot is revealed so don’t read them if you haven’t already read the book(s). Also, after nearly three years of blogging with the same header pic, I finally decided to change it. For those of you who get updates via email, I’m including the before and after pic. I also created a static landing page for my blog. It’s an experiment. I had been using my latest blog posts as a landing page, but it’s probably time to switch over to a static “hello, welcome, here’s who I am and what I write,” right? Check out the new static page here and let me know what you think.

What’s next? Ha! Well, those of you who have been following along on the tour know that I’ve got at least two potential WIPs waiting in the wings: a Noon Onyx B4 and a new, fantastic, creepy-romantic “YA deuce” I’ve been working on (meaning I envision two books). An aside: lots of online noise lately about whether adults should read YA or not. Wow. Really? I’m not going to waste too much time on an articulate response, but the very idea of someone else telling me what I should or shouldn’t read is mind-blowing. My general approach to reading fiction for entertainment is READ WHAT YOU LIKE, PEOPLE. And don’t let anyone tell you to read anything different. At one time or another, readers of young adult, new adult, romance, science fiction, and fantasy have all been called out for their “odd tastes.” What do I do when I hear this sort of nonsense? Ignore, ignore, ignore…. (Now if you’re reading for educational purposes, the entire discussion changes, but that’s a discussion for another day). Keep calm and read on, my fellow genre lovers!

Below are the WHOJ blog tour topics and links. Except for the post where I’ll be announcing the blog tour prize winners, this is the last you’ll hear about WHOJ in such concentrated fashion. You have all been WONDERFUL SPORTS, but I’m sure you’re looking forward to posts on some other topics too. Speaking of that, I’ve got a great guest blogger stopping by tomorrow — Susannah Sandlin (a.k.a. Suzanne Johnson) with her five favorite scenes from Allegiance. See you then! :-D

The Devil and His Fiddle (and the original titles of my Noon Onyx books)

My guest post at SF Signal is up! And it’s a fun one: I discuss what’s up with the association between the devil and the violin; I admit I used to be a horrible fiddle player; and I share the original titles to each novel in the Noon Onyx series. Long-time followers, you may remember the original title to Dark Light of Day but I’m not sure I ever shared the original title to Fiery Edge of Steel (knowledge was a big theme in that book, remember? ;-) ) and I’m even more sure that I’ve never shared the original title to White Heart of Justice with anyone but my agent and my editor. It’s a hoot!

* John Anealio reminded me on Twitter this morning about Niccolo Paganini, the 19th century Italian virtuoso whose playing was so diabolical his audience believed he was in league with the devil. Paganini’s story is intriguing. Check it out here. But, if you do, be sure to also stop by SF Signal because Paganini’s not in my post. I discuss three other interesting connections. Paganini

Have you ever played the violin? Do you play an instrument now? Where do you think the association between the devil and the violin got started? Lemme know in the comments over at SF Signal!

WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE – BLOG TOUR KICK OFF

Today is the kick off for my WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE blog tour! What does this mean?! Well, mostly it means lots of posts and prizes. Below is a tentative blog tour schedule. (The nature of blogging being what it is, I can’t guarantee that a blogger or review site will be able to post on the date listed below. Things happen. Schedules change. Glitches occur. But this is the plan.) I will do my best to add dedicated links on my WHOJ blog tour page as soon as the posts are live. Each stop on the Bewitching Book Tour will have additional chances for you to win my awesome prizes — also detailed below. There are only SEVEN DAYS left before White Heart of Justice‘s release. If you haven’t pre-ordered already, what are you waiting for?! If you have enjoyed even one blog post here, do me a huge favor and pre-order. :-) And, if you already have pre-ordered, THANK YOU!!! Early reviews and feedback have been great!! Noon Onyx fans, fantasy fans, fans of dark worlds inhabited by strong characters, monsters and magic — this one’s for you! :-D

PRE-ORDER LINKS

Since Lucifer claimed victory at Armageddon, demons, angels, and humans have coexisted in uneasy harmony. Those with waning magic are trained to maintain peace and order. But hostilities are never far from erupting…

After years of denying her abilities, Noon Onyx, the first woman in history to wield waning magic, has embraced her power. She’s won the right to compete in the prestigious Laurel Crown Race—an event that will not only earn her the respect of her peers but also, if she wins, the right to control her future.

However, Noon’s task is nearly impossible: retrieve the White Heart of Justice, a mythical sword that disappeared hundreds of years ago. The sword is rumored to be hidden in a dangerous region of Halja that she is unlikely to return from. But Noon’s life isn’t the only thing hanging in the balance. The sword holds an awesome power that, in the wrong hands, could reboot the apocalypse—and Noon is the only one who can prevent Armageddon from starting again…

Noon Onyx Series: Chance to Win a $25 eGift Certificate to a Bookstore of Your Choice

Roxanne Rhoads of Bewitching Book Tours helped me to organize a promo blitz featuring the first two books in my Noon Onyx series, DARK LIGHT OF DAY and FIERY EDGE OF STEEL. What the heck is a promo blitz? Well, I thought it would be a fast, fun way to remind people of the first two books in the series before the third one arrives in stores next month.

Promoting books is a tricky business. No one wants a novel shoved beneath their nose. And yet if authors don’t present their work to readers as an option, how will readers know about it? Sure, there are bookstores and bestseller lists. There are conferences and conventions, signings and readings. We have publishers and publicists. There are myriad ways in which our work can be offered as a viable choice to would-be readers. But for today, it’s all about blitzing the backlist!

Fiery Edge of Steel -Dark Light of Day Banner

So how does it work?

If you’re a regular follower of my blog, my guess is that you love books. The owners of the blog sites below do too. Visit their sites. Check them out. If you’re not already following them, consider following them. Each site should have a link to the Rafflecopter form where you can enter to win the $25 eGift Certificate I’m giving away. The randomly selected winner gets to choose the bookstore. For the complete rules, see my Giveaways page, but in a nutshell, here’s the deal:

  1. Void where prohibited
  2. No purchase required
  3. Open to international participants 18 and over with an email address where an electronic gift certificate can be sent
  4. Odds of winning based on number of entries
  5. Sweepstakes ends at midnight EDT on 4/27/14
  6. I’ll announce a winner (first name and last initial) here in the comments by 5/5/14

What else can you do?

  1. Share this post or a link to any of the other posts at the stops below.
  2. If you haven’t already read DARK LIGHT OF DAY or FIERY EDGE OF STEEL, consider buying and reading them (there’s still time to read the first two books before the third is released! :-) )
  3. If you have read them, but haven’t yet reviewed them, post a review.
  4. If you haven’t already, consider pre-ordering WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE.

Goodreads #Giveaway for DARK LIGHT OF DAY #UF #SFF #Fantasy

Jill Archer's Dark Light of Day

To kick off the upcoming release of the third Noon Onyx novel, WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE, my publisher is doing a Goodreads giveaway for the first book in the series, DARK LIGHT OF DAY. If you haven’t yet read a Noon Onyx novel, this is the place to start! Check it out here and feel free to help me spread the word about the giveaway (US only; 15 copies; ends 4/23/14).

Also, just saw the RT Book Reviews review for WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE, which is terrific:

urban fantasy, dark fantasy, fantasy, White Heart of Justice, Noon Onyx, Jill Archer, cover reveal, cover artArcher’s Noon Onyx series continues to be an original and compelling tale of what happens after Lucifer’s army triumphs at Armageddon and a new demon-based society is formed. Already an oddity because she has waning magic rather than the usual feminine waxing magic, Noon Onyx is determined to control her own future – but the cost could be higher than she suspects. Kudos to Archer for creating such a compelling heroine and mythos! (4 Stars)

RT Book Reviews, June 2014

Archer w Mouse EarsYou may have noticed how quiet I was last week. We went away for the first part of Spring Break. These pictures give you a hint about where we went. :-D We had an amazing time. I hope to load up more pictures and do a post about our trip later this week. Fiery Dragon

I’ve also got some other neat things planned for the upcoming week: a guest blogger on Tuesday; a one day promo blitz for my first two novels (including a giveaway) on Wednesday; and some information about a fun Twitter contest I’m doing to help get the word out about the Noon Onyx series on Thursday. So stay tuned…

I hope everyone is having a wonderful spring. If you celebrate Easter, have a happy one!

Sabrina Benulis, Author of the Books of Raziel Series, on Gothic Angels

Paranormal fantasy author Sabrina Benulis is releasing the second novel in her Books of Raziel series COVENANT on April 1st. She’s here to share a bit about why angels fascinate and inspire her. She’s also giving away three print copies of ARCHON, the first book in her series (US only) to celebrate her release. The Rafflecopter link is at the end of this post. Welcome, Sabrina!

Sabrina Benulis, paranormal, fantasy, gothic, angels, Books of Raziel

Don’t Be Afraid

Almost every author I know does research when they’re writing a fantasy novel. Of course, I’m no exception. Years ago (this makes me feel oddly old) when I first started writing The Books of Raziel series, I knew as much about angels as any other Catholic school girl or Hallmark devotee. Angels were always depicted much the same: typically a woman or androgynous figure with wings stuck to their back and an inviting smile. These angels weren’t scary or intimidating. They held hands with cherubs and sometimes you could catch them carrying bunches of flowers.

But I was always fascinated by what I remembered from my Religion classes. They were the stories of St. Michael fighting Satan, the harrowing accounts of Catholic saints being beaten up by demons, and the memory that when an angel appears in the Bible, the first thing they typically say is “Don’t be afraid.”

That last sentence intrigued me.

I knew when I sat down to write this book series that I wanted a different feel to whatever angels I put in the story. They of course needed to be beautiful, and enticing, and fascinating. But the more I researched, the more I wanted them to also reflect the true image of angels that our sentimentality has dismantled over the centuries. Those angels are perfect, but they are also alien. They’re simply on a different plane, and if you want to get technical, from another dimension. The human beings in the Bible instinctively sensed this and tended to shiver like idiots when a good angel appeared to them. I’m not sure I want to know what someone’s reaction would have been in front of a fallen angel.

Anyway, it was this sense of ‘otherness’ that I found irresistible.

The Books of Raziel series presents angels not merely as symbols of pure good or pure evil, but as a species separate from humans that shares the same gray areas. They are living beings, yes. They are people. But they are also above us. Their loves and losses are on a grander scale, and their world is something we can recognize, but also regard with fear and awe. What to us is supernatural, is natural to them. Their powers seem like magic, but as ever, anything that’s beyond our human abilities feels like grasping at stars.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that angels have become a popular subject in fantasy fiction in the past few years, and there are many authors who have taken the theme and run with it–for good reason. In a culture where science is everything, people need an escape. As an author I’d like to offer you one more vision of these incredible beings in my own personal fantastical flavor. Sure, it’s a gothic one, but there are plenty of cathedrals out there to match.

Don’t be afraid of angels?

Well, you probably should be. But that doesn’t mean you can’t also enjoy the thrill.

In closing, I’d like to thank blog owner Jill Archer for hosting me as a guest, and of course, visitors to the site who have been kind enough to share this glimpse into my writing adventures. Happy reading!

More About Covenant

The haunting gothic tale started in Archon continues-a mesmerizing work of the paranormal in which a young woman discovers that she is caught in a labyrinth of intrigue where angels, demons, and all the creatures between Heaven and Hell will stop at nothing to possess her.

A year ago, Angela Mathers, a talented artist with a tortured soul, enrolled at the Westwood Academy and encountered the angels who haunted her dreams. Then she discovered the dark truth … she is the Archon, a being of supreme power who will determine the fate of the universe. But with such power comes great danger, and for every force seeking to aid Angela there is another burning to stop her. After a scheming demon kidnaps the Book of Raziel, Angela must find her way through a nightmarish game and enter the Door to Hell to rescue her only friend before it is too late.

The perilous fate of both Heaven and Hell rests on her success.

(If you follow my blog, I’m betting you do! :-) ). Do you think that angel and demon archetypes can be used in myriad ways, serving as inspiration for all sorts of different otherworld stories? (I do! :-D ) Congratulations, Sabrina, on Covenant’s release. Thank you for guest blogging today!

Page Proofs for White Heart of Justice: Sneak Peek at Prologue and Page 1

White Heart of Justice, Noon Onyx, Jill Archer, fantasy

Page proofs for
WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE
(Most of those stickies are notes for me,
not typos!)

Just turned in the corrected page proofs for White Heart of Justice! As I mentioned after turning in reviewed proofs for Fiery Edge of Steel, this is a great moment for authors. It means, from my end, the book is FINISHED! Sure, there are all sorts of things that still need to be done, but most of them concern promotion — ways to get the word out about the book. So…

What can readers expect from White Heart of Justice?

If you liked the first two books, Dark Light of Day and Fiery Edge of Steel, expect to see more of the same blend of magic, deep, dark worldbuilding, romance, and action/adventure with a whiff of mystery, all told in a youthful first person voice (except for the prologue, which is told from a certain someone’s point of view ;-) ). That said, Noon is not as inexperienced in this third book as she was at the start of the series. (But that’s half the fun of reading a series, right? Getting to see how a character grows and changes over the course of the novels.)

In White Heart of Justice, readers will also get to see more of Nightshade (Noon’s tall, dark, and handsome healer brother), Aurelia (Noon’s somewhat enigmatic, always intense, sometimes aloof mother), and Karanos (Noon’s at times distant, often imposing Demon Council executive dad), as well as some other favorites. :-D

You’ll also get to see a new type of magic… and Noon using waning magic in a different way than she did in books 1 and 2. And, of course, there will be new beasts, new demons, and new places — both on and off campus — to explore!

Cloud 9 and Other Unrelated Things

Cloud Collage

Photo credit: my eleven year old,
who’s excited about the photography class she’s taking at camp next week

Paranormal Haven is doing a summer feature called “Why Didn’t I Think of That?!?!” where authors share some neat bookish idea that they wish they’d thought of first. Click here to see my choice. If you haven’t read this book yet, it’s perfect for your summer TBR pile!

Yesterday, I was at Marsha Moore’s place for my last interview for my Fiery Edge of Steel blog tour. She asked a handful of questions that got right to the point of the series. What a perfect way to wrap everything up. The post is sort of a “everything you need to know about the Noon Onyx series in 5 questions or less.” I’ll be doing one final post next week to announce tour-wide winners, etc. Click here for final chances to win copies of Dark Light of Day, Fiery Edge of Steel, and two $10 eGift Certificates to the bookstore of your choice.

As to why I’m on Cloud 9 and why I loaded up a cloud collage? WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE is finished and turned in. Woohoo! Yay! Will let everyone know release date as soon as I hear. I’ll also be doing some sort of cover reveal once it’s ready. (It may be a little while, but I did turn in my thoughts on that so I’m excited to see what the art department comes up with. :-D )

I’m taking some time off today to get my daughter ready for a fun camp she’s doing next week and then I’m looking forward to the weekend! Hope you all have a wonderful one!!

If Fiery Edge of Steel was made into a movie, who would I cast as Noon Onyx?

I’ve never answered the question of who I would cast as the lead characters in the Noon Onyx books if the books were made into movies. Mostly, it was due to the fact that no one actress came immediately to mind. But another reason is that I was reluctant to limit the character’s interpretation in that way. Books and movies are very different storytelling mediums. One of the amazing things about books is that readers can fill in the gaps of the story with their own imaginations. Part of me felt like if I said who I thought would make a great Noon, that’s who people would always visualize. But that’s ridiculous. And SO NOT FUN!

EJ over at From the Shadows asked me “the casting question” and this time, I had to answer it. So if you’re wondering who I would cast as Noon, Ari, and newcomer Rafe Sinclair, then check out today’s interview by clicking here. I talk about other stuff too, like when I started writing, what brought me to the paranormal genre, which supernatural talent I would want for my own, and why people will like Fiery Edge of Steel. And, of course, there’s a giveaway! Come comment for a chance to win a signed copy of Fiery Edge of Steel!

If you’ve read Dark Light of Day, I’d love to hear *your* thoughts on who would make a great Noon and Ari. Or you can tell me what you think of my choices and whether you’ve seen any of the MOVIES I reference. :-D

Hope to see you there! Have a great Wednesday!
