The Darker Side of Romance… currently my tagline and what I hope to showcase in my books. The Darker Side of Romance is not necessarily about ethnic characters (African-American, Hispanic, Native American, etc.). The Darker Side of Romance is actually about new adult stories touching on darker themes. In my new novella The Karma Chronicles~Vanessa’s Story the heroine is dumped because her ex’s tribe is racist and wants him to have a girlfriend from his culture. Racism is a dark theme but I firmly believe when characters have darker obstacles to overcome their romance is sweeter and more emotion is involved in the story. In my novel Sarim’s Scent, several dark themes run throughout the plot. Victoria suffers through abandonment, death, deceit, and betrayal. These dark themes would usually kill any budding romance but Victoria and Khafil manage to overcome and develop a relationship.

I live by the mantra: “Write what you like to read.” I love reading the works of authors who write stories that have emotional and complex conflicts the hero and heroine have to overcome in order to be together. The new adult genre captures these edgy themes perfectly. In order to make my new adult novels emotional, I usually think of some of the most painful (and cruel) reasons a relationship (for the 18-30 year old age group) can falter and come up with a field of ideas to write upon.

So if you are like me and enjoy the darker side of romance and new adult romance with intensity follow me on twitter @JulietteSprings and visit the pages of www.juliettesprings.com.

Until the next time 🙂

More About The Karma Chronicles — Vanessa’s Story

Devastated after an emotional break-up, Vanessa decides to finish her fall semester and leave Bear Creek University and the town of Bear Creek forever, certain starting over in a new place will soothe her wounded heart.  Her plans are derailed when her ex-lover returns wanting another chance.  Despite the chemistry between them and their sensual history, should she risk her heart again for a man who told her she wasn’t good enough for him or his tribe?

Bowing to tribal pressure, Sean Yonah was forced to hurt his best friend and lover, the one woman he couldn’t get enough of. Now the Spirits say she may be his “other.” Sean knows what he did was deplorable, but if he doesn’t convince Vanessa to forgive him, he’ll lose a lot more than the love of his life.

  1. I found out about New Adult last year and always looking out for new books to add. This one sparks my interest. And I love dark stories because they can be so deep and thought provoking.
