The Fashions: Halle Berry won the Best Style award, hands down. Loved her hair and her dress. She looked amazing!

The Host: Am I a horrible person for always getting Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon mixed up? Two late night comedians who look like near-twins and are both named Jimmy – what are the odds? My favorite part of Kimmel’s hosting was when he hoisted Sunny Pawar into the air a la Simba at Pride Rock.

The Speeches: More restrained than I thought they’d be.

The Show’s Relevancy: I’ll be interested to hear others’ take on this. I’ve been an on-and-off Oscar watcher for years. Last year, I didn’t watch. I think, at the time, I’d only seen one of the Best Pic nominees (The Martian), although I ended up seeing six of the eight later that year. This year, I was able to see four out of nine before last night. Out of those, my personal favorite (not the same as saying it should have won Best Pic) was Arrival.

The Ending: How the hell did that happen? I’ve never seen anything like it. Felt bad for the La La Land team and the Moonlight team. What a debacle. Way worse than Travolta butchering Idina Menzel’s name or Melissa Leo’s F bomb drop.

Did you watch the Oscars this year? Are they still relevant? What did you think?

  1. We did off and on. I thought it a strange show. The tour during the show by Jimmy Kimmel, and the ending. Was not one of my most favorite Oscars. I do have a list of shows to watch tho. We did watch 13 Hours and was disappointed when they were removed from the list of nominees because it was too political. I can’t wait to see Manchester By the Sea, Moonlight, and LaLaLand.

    1. I haven’t seen 13 Hours (and, truth be told, I hadn’t heard about it until now… interesting that it’s Michael Bay), but agree with you that the ending to Oscars 2017 was bizarre. As for future viewing — yes! — one of the things I like about the Oscars are the clips, etc. that pique my interest in films I haven’t yet seen.

  2. Totally stupefied by the ending but here is ONE explanation as to what happened. Price -Waterhouse keeps 2 (TWO) envelopes for each category-each envelope is held by a representative of PWH, and one person is on the left side of the stage, and one is on the right side of the stage. The presenters come from both sides. One presenter is handed the envelope while the other envelope remains with a rep from PWH….this is to ensure that no funny business happens when the winner’s names are announced. If the presenter screws up or says something other than what is written on the card, the other rep from PWH has the back up and is able to prove the error or wrong doing. Once the award has been presented, the second envelope is discarded (or handed back) and the next award envelope goes into the queue. Apparently, last night, the rep from PWH didn’t discard the second envelope from The Best Actress Category and ‘accidentally’ handed Warren Beatty the 2nd envelope from The Best Actress Category, and you could see his confusion during the announcement.

There are all sorts of theories about what happened but this seems to be the most logical. Conspiracy theorists are running amuk, amuk, amuk !!
