Privacy Policy

My website has a new Privacy Policy, which you can read here. I used privacypolicies.com for the form, but of course I’ve read the policy and have made some light changes to the auto-generated form. The purpose of this post is to let you know about it and to give you a few thoughts about it in non-legalese.

Longtime followers know that I’ve very seriously considered monetizing this site — twice. But I never have. It never felt right. So I pay an extra fee to WordPress/Automattic so you don’t see ads here — and I don’t have affiliate links.

The only thing Black Willow, LLC (my self-publishing company) currently sells are my books. At this point, I don’t offer classes, coaching, editing services, or anything like that. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! (Writers often have to supplement their income, and if they can do so with a bookish type job that complements their writing, all the better. I do the same, but my other bookish job is working as a librarian at my local library.) I also don’t offer any merchandise, although — who knows? — that may change in the future. If it does, you’ll be the first to know.

The purpose of this site is to provide an online home for me and my books. The purpose of my blog/update feature is broader. I post for a variety of reasons: to connect with people, to share my thoughts on various things, and to promote my books.

My Privacy Policy has detailed information about the type of information I collect from you. You should read it, but — to fulfill my promise of plainly speaking about this stuff — here are the highlights:

Depending on how you use this site/blog, I may collect the following info from you:

  • Email address
  • First name and last name
  • Address, State, Province, ZIP/Postal code, City
  • Cookies and Usage Data

In promoting my books, I use various data processors/service providers to assist me. These include WordPress/Automattic, Mail Chimp, Goodreads, Amazon, Book Depository, Barnes & Noble, Facebook, and Twitter. To better understand how they treat your data and information, please read their privacy policies. If you need help locating their privacy policies, contact me. (I thought about linking to them, but they will likely be constantly changing. Better to contact me if you have a concern about how your data is treated here and I’ll help you on an individual basis.)

Basically, I collect email addresses from those of you who want this blog delivered to your email inbox (thank you!) and I collect names and postal addresses from those of you who have contacted me directly about receiving ARCs or giveaways (thank you!!). Cookies are, quite frankly, a little beyond my ken. I have an idea of what they are, but if you’re worried about them… just contact me and we’ll figure it out together.

Why am I bothering with this?

Well, obviously, I care about privacy and protecting your data (did I mention I was a librarian? šŸ˜‰ ) But I also know privacy posts can be pedantic and annoying. So, after this, I’ll try to post about more exciting things.

BOTTOM LINE: If you have a question or concern about how your data is used here, CONTACT ME.
