Floating Girls, Documentaries for Creative Types, and my Dec newsletter!

Popping back in here mostly to let you all know that my December newsletter is out. What’s in it? Another deleted scene from Pocket Full of Tinder, a trio of gift book recommendations based on characters from the Noon Onyx series, some flashback flash fiction (a short poem I wrote for Fiery Edge of Steel‘s blog tour, which was based on one of my favorite childhood toys and O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi), and my quarterly giveaway.

Some random thoughts on floating girls and book covers

My older daughter took this picture of my younger daughter earlier this fall.

E was jumping on the trampoline, which was covered in leaves. When I saw the pic, it reminded me of all of the book covers I’ve seen with floating girls on them. Do you think that’s how they made those covers? Were these girls/women jumping on a trampoline?

Two that I saw recently and liked:

She Makes Comics

Because I’m pressed for time, here are my jumbled, not very articulate notes on it:

Explores history of women in comics

Enjoyed hearing about how the women got started and how the industry evolved

Thereā€™s a bit about cosplay & comic cons

Is it my imagination or is storytelling moving in a more visual direction?

Is it because when things evolve they evolve in ways that make them faster and more efficient?

A picture’s worth a thousand words

Ergo pictures must be better

But are they?

Speaking as a writer who is primarily a wordsmith and not an artist, it concerns me only in that a visual storytelling medium puts one more person in between me and my story’s reader. Is three a crowd?

Answer: it’s a dumb question šŸ˜€

The number of people involved in crafting a story doesn’t matter so long as there is a one unified creative vision.Ā  ??

Restless Creature

The story of prima ballerina Wendy Whelan’s difficult, but ultimately graceful and inspiring, exit from the New York City ballet where she danced for a record-setting three decades.

My younger daughter dances, so I’m always drawn to movies and shows about the world of ballet or contemporary dance. This documentary gives viewers a peek into the life of a principal dancer, her struggles with chronic pain and injury, surgery, hopes for a comeback, and finally her exciting transformation from traditional ballerina to the “restless creature” who joins a group of modern choreographers to hit the open road and bring her performance skills to a whole new audience.

Two documentaries about creators that are on my to-be-watched list:

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness

Follows the routines of those employed at Studio Ghibli, including filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki as they work to release two films simultaneously, The Wind Rises and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.


This documentary brings Hollywood’s premier composers together to give viewers a privileged look inside the musical challenges and creative secrecy of the world’s most widely known music genre: the film score.
