When Karolyn James contacted me about doing a guest post, I mentioned that no one was doing a seasonal post and that maybe she could do something on Thanksgiving. And she did. She’s here today with her Top 5 Favorite Turkey Day foods, but she’s also here to tell us the story of how she ended up on the bestseller lists… from a fairly mundane starting point. I often get asked how Brothers of Rock came to be. What is the actual evolution of this series… the series that made 2013 my biggest year ever and the series that put my name on both the NYT and USA Today bestselling book lists in October. It’s been a surreal ride…. But here it goes.
I was washing dishes. That’s where it started. It was a random night and I got the idea of a guy in a band coming off stage, cleaning up, and then asking himself what to do next. I always wanted to do something with rockstars and their life off stage. Brothers of Rock literally came from there. I then had a notebook and started writing like crazy. I started with the band name – Chasing Cross – then came up with the band members – Johnnie, Davey, Danny, Chris, and Rick. From there I just started thinking of ideas. Of plots, twists, turns, romance, and life. I wanted to have each book stand by itself but yet work together as a series.
It was a whirlwind ride getting the first book done. When I launched the book I was lucky enough to part of a major blog tour with ten other authors. The book hit and quickly became a bestselling book in romance! I needed the second… third… fourth… fifth… so I wrote all spring and summer. Then came the point where I needed to make a decision. Chasing Cross would have five books. Then what? Fans wanted more but I didn’t want to expand on Chasing Cross. So I was able to get the series extended with a new band! That’s right, in 2014 the Brothers of Rock series will continue but it will be with a new band. It’ll be five books and just by reading the first one already I can tell readers it’s going to be amazing.
So the evolution of a series that took my career to a whole new level came while washing dirty dishes. Sounds silly, but it’s true. It’s usually in those alone time moments when the greatest ideas come to us. That’s why if someone is experiencing writers block I tell them to step away and clear their mind. You never know what could happen!

- Stuffing
- Corn
- Mashed potatoes
- ALL of the above mixed together! 🙂
